'Til Death Do Us Part I killed my first wife, Sarah, because she had a terrible habit of burning my toast every other day at breakfast. I recall she would often try and soften the blow of spoiling the first meal of my day by scraping the charred coating into the sink and giving each slice a more than generous coating of honey or jam. But I always noticed. My second wife, Veronica, was far better at preparing breakfast but sounded like a wounded bull while sleeping. The incessant snoring was ever changing and it was impossible to grow accustomed to. It of course, could not be tolerated for long. After the loss of my second wife, I felt a change was in order so I moved from Sydney to Brisbane and changed my name from Peter to Paul. There I met Eunice and thought all my problems were over for Eunice was a joy. Not only would she make me the most wonderful eggs benedict with slices of golden brown toast, but she was as quiet as a lamb as she slept. In fact, I would probably still be with Eunice if not for the sudden interest she took in Jazz ballet. A friend of hers, Deborah, introduced her to it and seeing Eunice (and sometimes Deborah), floating around my living room in front of my television was really more than I could bear. I buried both their remains under the floor-boards of the house we’d been renting and decided another change was in order so I changed my name to Phillip and moved west. That’s when I met Lai Ping, a lovely Asian girl in Perth. I’d started working as a proof reader for Ready Books in town and met Lai Ping in the photocopy room on my first day. Oh but she was lovely! Her hair, dark and silky, shone brilliantly as the light from the photocopier scanned each page. I dare say it was love at first sight – for me at least. After several lunches we advanced to a dinner and after a wonderful night of romance, I won her heart and we became inseparable. We often visited that photocopy room during the day, stealing moments of pleasure in an otherwise dreary life. Oh yes, Lai Ping was lovely – and so different from all the rest. She was headstrong and always in control and she insisted we be married within the month. She found us a home – a two story villa with pool, large open fire, cellar and bungalow at the rear – and she made the place our own. I hear her now in the kitchen above, rifling around in the cutlery drawers and even the noises she makes as she moves suggest a display of elegance and grace. Even when she was furious at me moments ago for forgetting our two month anniversary (after she’d gone and bought me a gift), I found her lovely. Stomping around the house, she stopped only to throw the ornate glass swans and ducks she had decorated our home with until one shattered on my head. I remember the moment before I lost consciousness that she muttered something about disembowelling me and I felt both afraid and sexually aroused. How she managed to drag me down to the cellar in my unconscious state, I don’t know, but after knocking on the door until my knuckles bled I felt the incredible compulsion to note down what has happened. Anyway, I hear her coming now and am sure I also hear my anniversary gift - a chainsaw to ease my burden cutting wood for our fire.
